Abstract:
Over the past quarter century, oxides and compound containing 5d transition metal ions, e.g. Ir and Os, have attracted considerable attention with solid-state physicists because of various unconventional physical phenomena. Due to the competition between localization and itinerancy of d electron, there are a lot of interesting and unusual properties with different crystal structures reported, such as, metal-insulator transitions, topological phases and frustrated magnetism. In this study, we used high pressure method to synthesize the 5d oxides and researched their crystal structures and magnetic properties. Perovskite structures are densely packed crystal structures, and are commonly found as high pressure phases. So the high pressure synthesis is very effective to synthesize both polycrystalline samples and single crystal samples with perovskite structures. In order to exploring the novel phenomenon in the novel 5d materials, I have synthesized five osmium and iridium containing perovskite related oxides and characterized their crystal structures and magnetic properties.
Biography of the Speaker:
Dr. Yahua Yuan got bachelor in Applied Chemistry in 2009 from Tianjin University. Then, she moved to King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), an international research university in Saudi Arabia, as a funding class student, where she obtained the Master’s degree in Materials Science. In 2012, she entered the NIMS-Hokkaido University joint PhD program in functional materials chemistry, and got PhD degree in Functional Materials Science from Hokkaido University. Her dissertation research was on the high pressure synthesis of 5d transition metal oxides and their magnetic properties. She was familiar with 5d transition oxides and quite interested in their characterizations by using Synchrotron XRD. She masters the crystallographic refinement method by the Rietveld method using the RIETAN-FP computer program.
