HPSTAR Hosts FIB workshop
The 2015 “New Frontier in Studying Chemistry under Extreme Conditions: Applications of FIB (Focused ion beam) Technology” workshop was successfully held in Shanghai from May 21st to 22nd, 2015 at HPSTAR.
This workshop aimed to advance research on chemical reactions and compositional characterizations of materials under extreme conditions and to promote collaborations in developing analytical and fabrication tools at nano-scale. The FIB technology was widely introduced to high-pressure science in the past decade. Researchers from around the world gathered to share technique developments and research progress on applications of FIB technology in the fields of chemistry, geophysics, as well as materials science at high pressure.
Ho-kwang Mao, the director of HPSTAR, gave the opening ceremony. He presented several successful examples of applying the FIB technology in the field of high-pressure science and technology. “FIB is a unique tool in the advanced diamond-anvil-cell designing.” said Dr. Mao.
“FIB technology enables us to prepare small samples for synchrotron XRD/SEM/TEM/NanoSIMS analysis, uncovering chemical information of materials synthesized under extreme high P-T conditions”, remarked Li Zhang, staff scientist of HPSTAR.
Fourteen invited talks were given by scientists from China, USA, Japan, and France. Over ninety researches and students participated in the workshop.
