Postdoc Position in Experimental Physics of Strongely Correlated Materials under Extreme Conditions

The group of 'Superconducting and Magnetic Materials under Extreme Conditions' led by Dr. Mahmoud Abdel-Hafiez is a young research unit of the HPSTAR (research area of Physics of Strongly Correlated Materials). Our group is currently being built up at the HPSTAR in Beijing, China. Our current research group is interested in novel states of matter appearing in materials with strong electronic correlations. Examples of such exotic electronic behavior are unconventional superconductivity, CDW/SDW or quantum criticality. We strive for further understanding of these states by studying their properties at high pressure, very low temperature, and as a function of magnetic field.

Job description

The postdoctoral candidate will help to set up experimental apparatus for the measurement of thermal and magnetic properties under pressure. This type of measurement often gives surprising information on the link between several electronic orders such as between superconductivity and charge/spin density waves. It requires the setup of very sensitive electric transport and thermodynamic measurements in a dilution fridge. Additionally, depending on the candidate’s interest, external synchrotron for Muon Spin Resonance (MuSR) and x-ray powder/single crystal diffraction will be also performed.

Requirements

Interested candidates should meet the following requirements

•PhD in Physics.

•Experience with high pressure techniques and should be familiar with diamond anvil cells.

•Profound experience with experimental solid state physics, millikelvin temperatures in high magnetic fields.

•Strong knowledge of correlated electron physics.

•You are able to pursue challenging interdisciplinary problems.

•You have an excellent command of the English language and excellent communication skills.

•You can easily integrate in an interdisciplinary team with diverse backgrounds.

•Publishing in international journals and communicating in major conferences in the research field.

We offer:

We offer a challenging position for one year, with the possibility of a second year extension upon mutual agreement and funding availability. The position is available immediately, and will remain open until filled. The annual salary will depend on candidates' experience. For a first-time postdoctoral applicant, the starting salary is 200,000 RMB (~32,200 US dollars). There will be additional research and travel support for conducting experiments overseas when beam time is available.
